What is Rolfing?

Rolfing is the highly respected process of soft tissue manipulation that balances and realigns your body by releasing tension and strain through hands-on connective tissue manipulation, which releases both deep and superficial stress patterns in the human being. Dr. Ida P. Rolf, PhD founded this method over 50 years ago, first called structural integration; Dr Rolf realised that the cause of human discomfort, both physical and emotional may lie in our internal connective tissue and the relationship it has with the earth’s gravitational field.

What is the objective of Rolfing?

To align and improve posture in the human body which then moves and functions with greater freedom, and effortlessly maintains a more upright posture by manipulating the soft tissue to loosen the body blocks which allows them to align vertically.

Where Rolfing works?

The rolfer will achieve this by manipulating the body’s connective tissue network or fascial net which is closely [embriologicaly] knit with the nervous system. This plastic connective tissue unites the structure of the inner form and divides
its individual functioning units. Fascia can thicken in response to injury, trauma or poor posture patterns, causing compensatory imbalances throughout the body. Rolfing works to free the restricted fascia, restoring previously impaired muscle function and in such way that the various parts move and fit together in an improved relationship to one another in the gravitational field who which we are all subject.

What can I expect?

An initial series of Rolfing usually consists of about 10 sessions, each lasting 60-90 minutes, and generally spread 1-2 weeks apart. Under your Rolfer’s skilful eye and touch, each session builds on the results of the previous ones. Over the series both client and rolfer work together to achieve better posture and improved movement, often chronic discomfort disappears immediately or after the series has been completed. Particular conditions that commonly improve with Rolfing are; neck pain, back pain, knee pain, hip pain, TMJ dysfunctions, scoliosis, migraine and teeth grinding. Your understanding of how the body operates in harmony with gravity will also be developed throughout the sessions.

Who can benefit?

People of all ages, can ease long term discomfort and pain, children can be guided to better lines of development, athletes can improve their performances and recovery can be enhanced from injuries.
