What is Tuina?

Tuina is a deep and invigorating remedial massage which is practiced as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and has been used alongside acupuncture and herbal medicine in China for over 2000 years. Tuina, acupuncture and herbal medicine are still used extensively in the East for a wide variety of conditions and co-exist alongside Western Medicine in modern hospitals.

Tuina is used to -

• treat specific medical conditions
• aid in rehabilitation after injury
• maintain health as part of preventative healthcare.

It aims to bring the body into balance through the physical massage and manipulation of soft tissue and joints using many techniques which are unique to Tuina massage.

As with acupuncture, tuina practitioners view the body through the framework of the meridian or channel system of Qi flow and use the same acupressure points. A Tuina practitioner uses specific techniques to stimulate these key points on the surface of the body to encourage the body’s own healing processes.

What does Tuina feel like?

Depending on what is required a tuina treatment can be very vigorous and dynamic leaving you highly energised, or can be more gentle and nourishing resulting in a much more relaxed state.

A session includes a consultation, diagnosis and treatment which will be specific to your condition. Tuina is usually given through loose clothing with a cotton sheet placed over the body. Additional techniques which may be used include: cupping, guasha, moxibustion or herbal massage lotions and oils which are applied directly onto the skin.

What does Tuina treat?

Tuina offers a wide range of benefits. It revitalises and invigorates the whole body, relaxes tight or tired muscles, improves blood and Qi flow to diseased or injured areas of the body in order to encourage healing and works both on physiological and psychological aspects helping to release the stresses of our modern lives.

Conditions that respond well to Tuina massage include:

• Headaches/migraines
